DIY Fizzy Dinosaur Eggs: A Fun & Easy Activity for Kids!
If your house is anything like ours, you probably have a stash of large plastic Easter eggs hiding in the back of a closet somewhere. Instead of letting them gather dust until next spring, why not turn them into dissolving dinosaur eggs, a super fun, fizzy science experiment that’s also great for fine motor skills?
We made these colorful baking soda dinosaur eggs with just a few simple ingredients, and let me tell you, they were a roaring success!

What You’ll Need:
Large plastic Easter eggs (the bigger the better)
Baking soda (lots of it)
Food coloring
Water
Small plastic dinosaurs
Vinegar
Droppers, squeeze bottles, or pipettes (a spoon works too)
A bowl and a spoon for mixing
Step By Step
How To Make Fizzy Baking Soda Dinosaur Eggs

Molded Dino Eggs
Color the Dough
In a bowl, we mixed baking soda with a little water and food coloring until it reached a moldable, dough-like consistency. We made several colors because more colors = more fun!
Hide the Dinos
We placed a cute little plastic dinosaur inside one half of the Easter egg, packed the colored baking soda mixture around it, then snapped the egg shut to create a perfect egg shape.
Let Them Dry
After making a batch of eggs, we set them aside overnight to dry. (But if your grandkids are anything like mine, you might not make it that long before testing one out!)
The real magic happens when it’s time to dissolve the eggs! We filled small droppers with vinegar and let Pooh-Bear go to town squeezing tiny drops onto the eggs. The fizzing reaction was instant; lots of giggles, lots of bubbles, and slowly but surely, the dinosaurs began to peek through!
Not only was this so much fun, but using the droppers is a fantastic way to sneak in some fine motor skill practice without any complaints. (Shhh… don’t tell the grandkids they’re actually learning something!)

Tips for Maximum Fun
,🦕 Try using different colored vinegar for even more colorful eruptions.
🦕 Add a little glitter to the baking soda mix for sparkly eggs.
🦕Use a spray bottle of vinegar for hand-strengthening.
🦕 Make it a game: who can “hatch” their dinosaur first?
This simple activity kept us entertained for an entire afternoon and turned into an impromptu science lesson too. Pooh-Bear asked to do it again, so, of course, we made two sets of eggs. Plus, we finally put those plastic eggs to good use!
So gather your dinos, grab your baking soda, and get ready for some fizz-tastic fun. 🥚🦖✨
